Started as a furniture workshop
Cassina, founded in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda near Milan, initially specialized in crafting coffee tables. After World War II, the company separated its design studio from production in 1948, engaging external designers to pioneer innovative concepts. Renowned collaborations, notably with Gio Ponti, yielded iconic pieces like the Superleggera chair (1957), still in production today.
Top people of the design world
In the 1960s, Cassina significantly expanded by acquiring rights to furniture by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Jeaneret. Cassina has since been the exclusive manufacturer of chairs such as the LC1, LC2 and LC3. The Cassina I Maestri collection also features Charlotte Perriand’s sofas, chairs, tables, and cabinets, alongside pieces by Gerrit Rietveld, Franco Albini, and Frank Lloyd Wright, dating back to the early 20th century.
Cassina is renowned not only for classic chairs but also for pivotal design furniture of the latter half of the 20th century, curated in the Cassina Contemporanei collection. It features pieces by Vico Magistretti, Philippe Starck, Mario Bellini, Tobia Scarpa, Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and others, offering a comprehensive overview of design furniture since 1900 to suit every taste and style.
