The breeding ground of Brazilian wood design

Etel Design, based in São Paulo, specializes in Brazilian wood design, focusing on furniture and interior objects crafted by Brazilian designers past and present. Founded by Etel Carmona in 1985, the company began by restoring and reintroducing historical Brazilian furniture, later expanding to include modern designer collaborations. They use authentic tropical woods like canela, cumaru, imbuia, and peroba do campo, sourced sustainably from Brazil and other South American countries. Etel Design is committed to promoting sustainable wood use and received the FSC label in 2001, pioneering environmental stewardship in Brazilian design.

Brazilian designers past and present

Etel Design offers an extensive collection featuring iconic Brazilian design pieces from the 20th century by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues, Oswaldo Bratke, and Branco & Preto. Branco & Preto, known for pioneering Brazilian materials in their furniture during 1950-1955, had their pieces reintroduced by Etel Design in 2005. Contemporary highlights include designs by Isay Weinfeld, Dado Castello Branco, and Carlos Motta. Etel, alone or in cooperation with other designers, has also built up an extensive oeuvre consisting of tables, chairs, cabinets, decorative objects and lamps.

Wood with FSC label

Many of the designers that Etel Design represents use tropical wood in their products. And that’s not just furniture. Lamps, vases, bottles and bowls are often made entirely or partially of wood. In order to protect the rainforest, Etel Design has been involved in projects that promote the sustainable use of wood from the Amazon region since 1999. In 2001, the design house was one of the first in Brazil to be awarded the FSC label.
